Hanoi, Vietnam, Old Quarter Walk

Mother’s Day was spent in Hanoi, Vietnam with my little family. Our introduction to Hanoi was a busy, noisy, chaotic ride on cyclos through the old district, Old Quarter,  filled with people eating, people wandering, scooters whizzing winding streets, cars just barely missing our toes and bursts of color everywhere.

“Frog Fountain” Drawing with School Children

As I wandered into a local park I found a group of school children drawing the “Frog Fountain”. The fountain was built by the French and later the Vietnamese added dragons.

Andrew Wyeth in China

Andrew Wyeth in China, YUAN Space, Beijing

I walked into the YUAN Space in Beijing excited to see Andrew Wyeth’s works on display. It made me a bit homesick to see the rural landscapes of my home country and feel that sense of solitude in his drawings and paintings. It is amazingly powerful how the subtle lines of a drawing and the strokes of color in a painting can evoke such emotions from people. His works show such mastery of light and it was a lovely, early afternoon quick sketching and admiring his works.

Summer Palace – Revisitng… a lesson on First Impressions

, , ,

Returning to the Summer Palace, I painted a quick watercolor sketch to work on keeping the first vivid impression. I begin with masses of light and shade without first drawing with lines, such as the drawing of the Tower of Buddhist Incense. It an approach I’m practicing with watercolor. Keeping in mind simplicity, values and keeping away from details that can spoil the beginnings of a sketch.

The Summer Palace is my favorite site to visit in Beijing.   It is a spectacular place to re-visit at all times of the day and during the changing seasons. The spring cherry blossoms are in full bloom and nature is beginning to prepare for summer.

The bold colors of the glazed tiles in yellow, green, blue and black stand out from a distance. My goal for future sketching is to work on proportions, values and that first impression.

Temple of Earth

The Lantern Festival (元宵节, yuán xiāo jié) in Beijing has arrived. The first full moon night and the end of the two-week-long marathon of round the clock fireworks marking the end of The Chinese New Year period.

I found myself braving the wind in weather that felt like -16℃ in search of a tradition of lanterns being lit but instead found refuge at the Temple of Earth. As I stood in the doorway watching many saying quiet prayers and burning incense or joss sticks, I looked ahead toward the stairway of the Altar of Earth made of two tiers of white marble. The large container holding the joss sticks almost took on a life of its own as it stood in front of the path of the altar and the main shrine inside.

Fireworks exploding on the frozen pond below my kitchen window tonight. I’m always amazed at how close viewers get when they are igniting fireworks.

Happy Chinese New Year!
